I was speaking with a family recently and the conversation brought up something that I say privately to many men but not publicly – unless specifically asked. I feel comfortable sharing now for the sole purpose of encouragement.
The primary problem that I encounter with developing business and working skills in children is with the fathers. Men – you are dragging down your wife and children by not leading your children in developing the skills they need to learn how to work with their hands, to critically think, and to manage business situations. The great news is that you don’t have to know how to do the things that I just mentioned, but you do need to allow your family and children to learn from others! You can start working with your children as early as 10 years old or earlier. Your young children can learn how to read a tape measure at 4 or 5 years old, and can work almost any tool you have or that they will need. Men – find ways to work with your children in areas that you don’t know how. I am an accountant by education and have a business background. My wife loved farming at an early age and always wanted to have a farm. When we built our first barn, I asked men that I knew to show my children how to build it and they guided them in the first steps. From there, they learned how to pour concrete, frame the building, run electrical wire, install windows. Now several of my sons are working in the construction business. It starts with fathers that are willing to ask men to help train their children.
